WHAT IT IS
*In mid-year 1986 the all-new MKIII was introduced, officially separating the Supra from the newly front-wheel drive Celica. Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension" (TEMS) was also available in an optional sports package with along with a limited slip differential. This system allowed the driver to select between "normal" (soft) and "sport"(medium) modes. The TEMS computer would automatically set the shocks to medium at freeway speeds, and would go firm under hard braking, acceleration, or sharp steering inputs.
*A major reason for this could stem from Toyota’s decision to aim for a boulevard ride as well as leading edge (a claimed 1.0 g) handling. The Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension (TEMS) may be the most complicated ever installed in a standard production car. You’ve probably read about TEMS before, since a version of it is also used in the Cressida. Simply put, the system controls the shock damping. After the driver selects between Normal and Sport mode, the on-board computer chooses shock settings of soft, medium, or firm in Normal, and medium or firm in Sport, depending on driving conditions.
*Where the car really shines though, is the handling. It takes turns flat as a pancake. Even when the TEMS is set for "normal" soft ride, the TEMS kicks in and stiffens up the ride in turns or heavy breaking.
HOW IT WORKS
* The system itself is controlled by a main TEMS computer, that is given inputs from: 1) the engine ECU for vehicle speed and throttle position, 2) the steering sensor mounted on the steering column, 3) the 12 v thru the brake light switch and 4) the tems mode select switch; that indicate the necessary stiffness level. The output from the computer is then transfered to each of the four TEMS actuators at the tops of each shock tower. The actuators then turn the valve on the top of each shock a certain amount to set the shock either soft/medium/hard.
